Ventolin: instructions for use, analogues and reviews

Ventolin has an effect on the adrenergic receptors of the smooth muscles of the bronchi, causing a pronounced bronchodilatory effect and practically without affecting the adrenergic receptors of the myocardium. Pharmacological action continues for 4 hours after administration.

The main active ingredient is salbutamol. In recommended therapeutic doses, it has no negative effect on CVS, does not cause an increase in blood pressure. To a lesser extent, it has a positive chrono- and inotropic effect. Causes expansion of the coronary arteries. suppresses early and late bronchial reactivity, reduces airway resistance, and prevents or relieves bronchial spasm. In addition, the drug helps to increase the vital capacity of the lungs and mucociliary clearance, and also activates the functions of the ciliated epithelium and stimulates the secretion of mucus.

After the use of inhalation forms, the action develops quickly, the onset of the effect – after 5 minutes, maximum – after 30–90 minutes (75% of the maximum effect is achieved within 5 minutes), duration – 4–6 hours.

The drug is available in the following forms:

  • Tablets – 20, 50 and 100 pcs. in 1 package, 1 tab. contain 2 and 4 mg of salbutamol.
  • 150 ml syrup in a bottle – 2 mg in 1 ml.
  • Two-layer tablets 0.008 g, 20 or 50 pcs. packaged.
  • Syrup for internal administration – 2 mg in 2 ml, in a bottle of 50 ml.

Ventolin for inhalation:

  • Nebula (dosed aerosol in plastic ampoules) – 200 doses in 1 bottle. 2.5 ml in a nebula.
  • Dosed aerosol without freons (chlorofluorocarbons, which destroy the ozone layer) – 200 doses in 1 bottle. 100mcg salbutamol in 1 dose.

Indications for use

What does Ventolin help from? The drug is prescribed in the following cases:

  • relief of attacks of bronchial asthma, incl. with exacerbation of severe bronchial asthma;
  • prevention of bouts of bronchospasm associated with exposure to an allergen or caused by exercise;
  • use as one of the components in long-term maintenance therapy of bronchial asthma.
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), accompanied by reversible airway obstruction, chronic bronchitis.

Instructions for use Ventolin, dosages

not intended for injection. Ventolin is administered by inhalation using a nebulizer with a mask, endotracheal or T-shaped tube. With hypoventilation, there may be a risk of hypoxia, then the inhaled air can be enriched with oxygen.

Nebula are applied without dilution, but if you need long-term inhalation (more than ten minutes), you can dilute with sterile 0.9% sodium chloride solution.

The drug should be used in well-ventilated areas, since part of the drug is inhaled into the environment. This is especially important in a hospital setting, where several patients can use nebulizers at the same time.

The initial dosage of Ventolin when administered by inhalation using a nebulizer is 2.5 milligrams, but if necessary, it can be increased to five milligrams. Inhalation can be done up to four times a day. In a hospital setting, with severe airway obstruction, the dose for adult patients can be increased to 40 mg / day.

The clinical efficacy of use in children under eighteen months of age by administration through a nebulizer has not been investigated.

Spray can

The inhalation aerosol is designed to be used 200 times. Can be used by adults and children from 2 years old.

For the purpose of long-term maintenance therapy, adults are usually prescribed 200 mcg up to 4 times a day. To prevent bronchospasm in childhood, 100-200 μg is used (1-2 inhalations).

Before using the aerosol can, remove the cap from the mouthpiece, make sure that the mouthpiece is clean, shake the can vigorously several times. After which the mouthpiece is inserted into the mouth, wrapped around the lips. Now you should make a deep and slow exhalation through the nose.

Then you need to inhale as deeply as possible through the mouth, while simultaneously pressing on the top of the inhaler and releasing 1 dose of the drug. After inhaling, you need to hold your breath for a few seconds, remove the mouthpiece from your mouth and exhale slowly. If you need a second aerosol of Ventolin, then after a 30-second break, the procedure can be repeated.

It is prescribed to patients in adulthood, 2 ml 3-4 times a day. If necessary, the dosage can be increased to 4 ml.

Standard dosages

Relief of an attack of bronchial asthma – no more than 4 times a day:

  • For adults, the dose is 100-200 mcg.
  • Children – 100 mcg (in severe cases – 200 mcg) of salbutamol.

Prevention of bronchospasm:

  • For adults, inhalation of 200 mcg of salbutamol is recommended 15 minutes before the expected load or contact with the allergen.
  • For children, a dosage of 100 mcg is recommended, but if necessary, it can be increased to 200 mcg.

Supportive therapy:

Adults and children – 100 mcg up to 4 times a day.
