pharmachologic effect

The drug relieves acute attacks of vestibular dizziness of various etiologies, eliminates noise and ringing in the ears, prevents the development of deafness.

The preventive and therapeutic efficacy of the systemic use of the drug is manifested in Meniere’s disease, the main clinical symptoms of which include attacks of dizziness (vertigo) with nausea and vomiting; noise in ears.

Indications for use

Disease and Meniere’s syndrome, characterized by dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus. Symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo of various origins.

Method of administration and dosage

The tablets are taken orally during or after meals. The dose of the drug and the duration of the course of treatment are determined individually. During the course of treatment, adults are prescribed 24–48 mg of betahistine per day (0.5–1 tablet 3 times a day). 

In most cases, improvement is noted in 2-3 weeks. The best results are obtained with a course of treatment for several months.

Evidence suggests that early-onset drug administration prevents disease progression and / or late-stage hearing loss.

Side effects

Hypersensitivity reactions, nausea, dyspepsia. In some cases, complaints of minor indigestion are possible, more often in patients with chronic diseases of the digestive tract.  

These side effects usually disappear when the drug is taken with food or when the dose is reduced. Rarely – headache, allergic reactions. 

Contraindications

Individual hypersensitivity to drug components, pheochromocytoma, gastric ulcer and / or duodenal ulcer in the acute phase, asthma with frequent attacks.

Overdose

Several cases of drug overdose with the onset of symptoms of moderate severity – nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, headache, drowsiness after taking the drug at a dose of up to 640 mg – have been described .  

Serious complications – seizures, heart – lung disorders – possible when deliberate taking the drug in high doses, especially in combination with other drugs overdose.  

Treatment. It is urgent to remove the drug from the stomach, induce vomiting or gastric lavage. No specific antidotes are known. Treatment is symptomatic.
