pharmachologic effect

Lowers the concentration of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL) and triglycerides (TG) in patients with homo- and heterozygous hereditary hypercholesterolemia, non-hereditary forms of hypercholesterolemia and with mixed dyslipidemia.

Indications for use

In atherosclerosis, in order to reduce elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and TG in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia with insufficient effectiveness of the diet and other non-drug methods of correction. For the secondary prevention of myocardial infarction, to reduce the risk of death or re-hospitalization for angina pectoris in patients with ‑cardiovascular disease and / or dyslipidemia.

Dosage and administration

Patients should follow a low-cholesterol diet before and during treatment. The usual initial dose for adults is 10 mg once a day, the therapeutic dose is 10–80 mg per day. The drug can be taken once a day at any time, regardless of the meal.

The dose of the drug is determined individually. The level of lipids in the blood must be monitored for 2-4 weeks after the start of treatment and in the case of a dose adjustment of the drug.

For primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia , the usual adult dose is 10 mg per day, for homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia – 80 mg per day, the maximum daily dose is 80 mg.

Side effects

Constipation, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, headache, weakness, muscle pain, insomnia.

Very rarely – dizziness, myopathy, paresthesia, pancreatitis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, itching, rashes, vomiting, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the drug, liver disease in the active phase, an increase in the level of transaminase activity in the blood serum by 3 times or more of unknown etiology. During pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Overdose

To date, no cases of overdose have been reported. If necessary, the stomach is washed, activated charcoal is prescribed, and symptomatic treatment is carried out.
