pharmachologic effect

Paracetamol has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic effects.

Indications for use

Pain syndrome of mild and moderate intensity of various origins. Fever in infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Method of administration and dosage

Pills. Adults and adolescents weighing more than 60 kg   take 0.5 g up to 4 times a day. The maximum daily dose is 4 g. The tablets should be taken with a small amount of liquid. The maximum duration of treatment is 5-7 days.      

For children 3 months to 1 year old,   a suspension of 2.5-5 ml (0.5-1 tsp) is recommended , from 1 year to 6 years – 5-10 ml (1-2 tsp). Frequency rate of admission – 4 times a day; the interval between doses is at least 4 hours. The maximum duration of treatment is 5 days. Paracetamol should be used 1-2 hours after a meal with plenty of fluids.           

Rectal suppositories.   It is used in adolescents and adults weighing more than 60 kg   in a single dose of 0.25-0.6 g. The maximum daily dose is 1 g. The frequency of administration is up to 4 times a day. Rectal suppositories for children aged 3-12 years are   recommended at 240 mg 1-3 times a day with an interval of at least 4 hours.        

It is undesirable to use the drug for more than 3 days.

Side effects

Nausea, abdominal pain , allergic reactions. With prolonged use in high doses, liver and kidney dysfunction is possible. Rarely – anemia, thrombocytopenia, methemoglobinemia. 

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug. Severe liver and kidney dysfunctions, hepatic and renal failure, phenylketonuria, genetic deficiency of glucose – 6 – phosphate – dehydrogenase, blood diseases. Caution should be exercised during pregnancy and lactation, as well as in elderly patients.

Overdose

The toxic effect of paracetamol poisoning in adults is possible in the case of a single dose of more than 10 g, and in children – more than 150 mg / kg.   

Symptoms   Nausea, vomiting, anorexia, pallor, abdominal pain, developing most often during the first 24 hours after taking the drug. A detailed clinical picture of liver damage manifests itself after 1–6 days, occasionally a rapid development of liver dysfunction with the possible development of liver failure is possible. 

Treatment.   Hospitalization, blood test to determine the level of paracetamol in the blood serum, gastric lavage. The introduction of antidote M – acetylcysteine ​​intravenously or orally is possible within 10 hours after taking the drug, further – symptomatic treatment.
