Clomid – what is it and why is it taken

What is clomid – one of the most frequently asked questions from athletes, because for many representatives of sports disciplines, not a single correct course of anabolic and androgenic substances can do without this drug. Clomid is an antiestrogen, its binding effect extends to the gonads and hypothalamus. This drug helps the pituitary gland to produce more hormones, which are necessary to stimulate ovulation, due to which the egg is released from the ovary and the chances of getting pregnant in a woman increase. allows men to fight idiopathic oligospermia – the lack of sperm for fertilization.

In addition to the use in traditional medicine to treat reproductive function, clomid is also actively used in sports practice during post-cycle therapy. An antiestrogen can be classified as the basic tools that are needed on the course. Clomid is used primarily to normalize the axis of the hypothalamus-pituitary-testes.

The principle of clomid in the body and why it is needed at PCT

To understand why clomid is needed, you need to know how steroids act on the body. Everyone knows that on a course of anabolic and androgenic substances, the body stops producing natural testosterone, since its necessary amount comes from the outside, just for this process – the production of testosterone, the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular arc is responsible.

The longer the course of steroids, the greater the dose of the active substance, the stronger the drugs are used on the course, the more the arc is suppressed. The extent to which at the end of the course will be unable to produce testosterone depends on the amount of progesterone and prolactin, as well as estradiol. It is for this reason that many experienced athletes constantly monitor the concentration of these hormones on the course due to the delivery of tests, stock up on inhibitors. From how soon the production of natural testosterone is restored, the more beautiful the body will have after a course of steroids, the loss of strength indicators will most likely stop, and the rollback phenomenon will be minimized.

It is in this case that antiestrogens come to the rescue. In sports practice, three drugs from this line are actively used – clomid, tamoxifen and toremifene. We will not talk about the last two varieties. In general, representatives of sports disciplines are advised to take Clomid, as it is highly effective and maximally safe – in rare cases it can provoke the occurrence of adverse reactions. Clomid has the following positive effects on the athlete’s body:

  • increases the level of LH and FSH, which leads to stimulation of testosterone production;
  • selective blocking of estrogen receptors in the body – in the hypothalamus and testicles;
  • increased libido, stimulation of spermatogenesis.

After completing the course of anabolic and androgenic steroids, the athlete’s body is in the so-called “hormonal pit”, due to the fact that the gonadotropic hormones – luteinizing and follicle-stimulating, are practically zero. It is their level that affects the production of natural testosterone. Clomid directly affects gonadotropic hormones, increasing their concentration. He also comes into contact with estrogen receptors, so most of the estrogen in the body will be inactive.

During the first days after the start of post-cycle therapy with clomid, the levels of gonadotropic hormones producing testosterone rise to the highest values, which in turn increases the production of natural testosterone. As a result, in two to six weeks, it is possible to completely normalize the level of the main male sex hormone, at the same time after the drug is discontinued, the concentration of gonadotropic hormones returns to its previous normal level.

As for the number of weeks required to fully restore the arc, everything is individual. One athlete may need only two weeks, since the second one is about a month and a half, it also depends on the severity of the course, which allows you to choose the optimal dosage of antiestrogen.

What adverse reactions can clomid cause?

After it became known why clomid and how it acts in the body, you need to know what undesirable side reactions may occur in an athlete during post-cycle therapy.

The action of an antiestrogen can adversely affect visual function. Clomid also has a toxic effect on the liver, but they are several times less than the toxicity of tamoxifen. In addition, athletes may observe the following side effects:

  • frequent headaches;
  • dizziness attacks;
  • sleep disturbances – insomnia;
  • drowsiness;
  • disorders of the digestive tract, expressed as feelings of nausea, vomiting.

All of the above adverse reactions usually disappear after discontinuation of antiestrogen. It should be emphasized that the use of clomid may increase the risk of blood clots. To minimize this effect and avoid thrombosis, it is necessary to increase water intake – at least one liter per day.

Relative to other antiestrogens, clomid is a rather expensive drug, but it is quite high quality. What can we say about how you can replace clomid, then the best option may be toremifene. Tamoxifen is quite toxic to the athlete’s body and non-compliance with dosages can cause many adverse reactions that outweigh the benefits of this drug. It is also worth noting that clomid can be used after a course of any anabolic and androgenic drugs, unlike tamoxifen, which can not be used after a course of nandrolones and trenbolones.
