pharmachologic effect

When it enters the acidic environment of the stomach, the drug forms a protective film on the surface of ulcers and erosions, which contributes to their scarring.

The drug is active against Helicobacter pylori , a microorganism that plays a role in the development of chronic type B gastritis and peptic ulcers.   

Indications for use

Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum in the acute stage, chronic gastritis and gastroduodenitis in the acute stage, including those caused by Helicobacter pylori ; functional dyspepsia, erosive and ulcerative lesions of the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum caused by the intake of NSAIDs. 

Method of administration and dosage

Adults and children over 14 years   prescribed 1 tablet 4 times a day for 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch and dinner, and 4 – the first time before going to bed or 2 tablets 2 times a day for 30 minutes before eating. The tablet is washed down with a little water. The duration of the course is 4–8 weeks. For the next 8 weeks, do not take bismuth-containing drugs. 

If a patient is found to have persistence of Helicobacter pylori,   it is advisable to combine the treatment of the drug 1 tablet 2 times a day with oral administration of Clarithromycin 500 mg 2 times a day and the use of Amoxicillin (Flemoxin solutab) 1 g 2 times a day.  

If necessary, quadrotherapy is prescribed: with the drug 120 mg 2 times a day, it is recommended to prescribe Tetracycline at a dose of 500 mg 4 times a day, Metronidazole 500 mg 3 times a day in combination with one of the proton pump inhibitors (Omeprazole, Lanzoprazole, Rabeprazole or Esomeprazole) in a standard therapeutic dosage.    

The duration of the combination therapy is 7-14 days. To improve regeneration in ulcerative defect may further drug treatment: 1 tablet 4 times a day for 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch and dinner, and 4 – the first time – before going to bed. The total duration of drug treatment is up to 6 weeks (no more than 8 weeks).   

Side effects

Black color of feces, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, itching, rashes, headache.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to bismuth subcitrate and / or other components of the drug; severe renal dysfunction; During pregnancy and breastfeeding; age up to 14 years.

Overdose

With frequent use in high doses or with prolonged use of the drug, an overdose is possible, which manifests itself by symptoms characteristic of reversible renal dysfunction.

Treatment . Rinse the stomach, take activated charcoal, an osmotic laxative drug. With the development of severe renal failure, hemodialysis is indicated.
