pharmachologic effect

It has a sedative and hypnotic effect. It increases the duration of sleep, improves its quality and reduces the number of nighttime awakenings.

Indications for use

Severe sleep disturbances: situational and temporary insomnia.

Method of administration and dosage

Inside. Treatment should be started with the lowest effective dose. The daily dose should not exceed 7.5 mg (1 tablet). The drug should be taken just before bedtime. 

Recommended daily dose: for adults under the age of 65 – 1 tablet; patients over 65 years old – 0.5 tablets; patients with impaired liver function and patients with chronic respiratory failure – 0.5 tablets; in patients with renal insufficiency, treatment should be started with a reduced dose (0.5 tablets).       

The duration of therapy for situational insomnia is 2-5 days, temporary – 2-3 weeks. The duration of treatment by the decision of the doctor can be increased, but should not exceed 4 weeks.  

Side effects

Possible side reactions: A bitter or metallic taste in the mouth; sometimes – nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, dyspepsia, anorexia, or increased appetite; upon awakening – drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination; headache, behavioral disturbances, changes in consciousness, anxiety, irritability, aggressiveness.  

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any – any component of the drug. Severe acute and severe chronic liver failure. Acute respiratory failure. Severe sleep apnea syndrome. Myasthenia gravis. Congenital galactosemia; malabsorption syndrome glucose / galactose or lactase deficiency (from – the content of lactose in the formulation). Childhood. During pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Overdose

Symptoms Confusion of consciousness, lethargy, drowsiness, ataxia, muscle weakness, arterial hypotension, respiratory depression, coma. Overdose can be fatal, especially in cases of simultaneous overdose of several CNS depressants. 

Treatment. Induce vomiting, gastric lavage with respiratory protection, then – intake of activated charcoal. Hemodialysis is ineffective. Careful observation of the function of cardio – vascular and respiratory system.   

It may be effective to administer flumazenil, which has the opposite effect of zopiclone, manifested by the occurrence of neurological disorders (convulsions).
